What did you do on Monday night? You probably went home after a long, productive day in the office, relaxed and recovered from an action packed weekend, right? Well, that perhaps would’ve been the rational thing to do in preparation for a busy week ahead – not if you’re a gig loving member of the good ship BURN though!
Monday night was our latest Gig Night and with that, the team revisited O2 Shepherds Bush Empire as French indie pop legends Phoenix were in town to promote their fifth album – ‘Bankrupt!’ which launched that day in the UK. Album launch gigs can be quite tiresome – artists meticulously working through their new album track by track when in truth, sometimes audiences want to hear familiar favourites performed too. However, Phoenix didn’t disappoint – playing an extremely high tempo 80 minute set including crowd pleasers ‘Lisztomania,’ ‘1901’ and ‘Lasso’ all from the Grammy award winning 2009 album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.
By, frontman, Thomas Mars’ own admission, Phoenix have not performed live in the UK “since a very, very long time” (perhaps not grammatically correct but then again not many of the band’s lyrics make a great deal of sense do they?) and that may explain an apparent underlying desire to make this gig one to remember. And it certainly was.
Now, I’m sure I’m not the only fan to have pondered the question “Where would you go, where would you go with a lasso?” (lyrics from Lasso) and Thomas Mars’ answer provided one of the highlights of the night. The charismatic, if not slightly crazy, front man climbed onto the balcony in the venue during the encore, before crowd-surfing back to the stage. Amazing!
Check out our footage of Thomas singing from the balcony in this exclusive footage shot by our colleague Adam below him!
Phoenix are back in the UK this Summer performing at Glastonbury, T in the Park, Reading and Leeds Festival. We recommend you try to catch them. Hopefully they’ll be as brilliant as they were on Monday!
